Abstract:
The present study represents a brief analysis of Professor Claudio Moreschini’s personality and of his work dedicated to the Cappadocian Fathers. The reason for writing such a study was the presence of the Italian professor, in January 2024, at the "Justinian the Patriarch” Faculty of Orthodox Theology, on the occasion of the publication of the volume Părinții Capadocieni. Istorie, literatură, teologie [The Cappadocian Fathers. History, Literature, Theology]. Taking into account the importance of the event, we considered necessary to present to the Romanian public such a renowned personality in patristic studies. The study begins with a preliminary section, followed by a chronological presentation of the main publications that Professor Claudio Moreschini has produced from the appearance of his first book in the Romanian publishing environment until 2024. The second section – "Capadocienii în viziunea lui Claudio Moreschini” ["The Cappadocians in Claudio Moreschini’s vision”] – consists of a brief analysis of the Italian professor’s relation to the Cappadocian Fathers based mainly on his works published in Romanian, but also taking into account some other studies and articles published in foreign languages. The third chapter of the study, entitled "Claudio Moreschini între tradiție și inovație” ["Claudio Moreschini between tradition and innovation”], is a presentation of what Claudio Moreschini preserved and what he brought new in his research concerning the Cappadocian Fathers, with a particular emphasis on his idea that the number of Cappadocians should not be limited to the three great hierarchs of the 4th century – St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian and St Gregory of Nyssa –, since the expression "Cappadocian Fathers” can also be used to refer to others who were born, active or had contact with the intellectual and theological environment of Cappadocia.
