Abstract:
The present study wishes to honour Fr. Prof. Ioan D. Petrescu-Visarion (1884-1970), his national and international research activity of over 60 years in the field of Byzantine Music, and his significant work. His name is mentioned by most lexicons and Music dictionaries among the Romanian theologians, but his personality has yet to be analyzed by a study from his home country and within the context of his becoming. Therefore, after serving for almost three decades as a parish priest in his hometown, I present this brief biographical study in the memory of my predecessor, providing supplementary information on the life and works of Ioan D. Petrescu and placing him among the great theological personalities born in Dâmbovița. Some of them were born in the vicinity of the small town of Răcari, formerly Podu Bărbierului, also between the 19th and 20th centuries: the famous professor and confessor Teodor M. Popescu (1893-1973), born in Boteni; Fr. Prof. Niculae M. Popescu (1886-1963), historian and academician, born in Dâmbovicioara, or writer Teodor Manolache (1906-1977), another native of Boteni, one of the best librarians of the Faculty of Theology of Bucharest and a long-time secretary of the editorial boards of the central Church magazines. A general overview of these personalities, beginning with that of Fr. Ioan D. Petrescu-Visarion, proves that their worthy lives and activity in the service of the Church must not be forgotten, for they can provide useful models.
