Abstract:
Nicholas Kabasilas was born in Thessaloniki, around 1300. He started his education with his uncle, archbishop Nilus Kabasilas, continuing his studies in Thessaloniki and then Constantinople. Afterwards, he returned to Thessaloniki, becoming one of the city’s most prominent social and personalities. In 1354, he was one of the three candidates for the seat of Patriarch in Constantinople. He passed away sometime between 1370- 1380. Saint Nicholas Kabasilas is the last from a series of great Byzantine theologians and writers of the 14th century. He left behind numerous works on various subjects, some of which are yet unpublished. His talent is beyond any doubt, and his writings are unique due to his vitality and power of persuasion. His readers were delighted by the strong, yet graceful sentences used by Saint Nicholas Kabasilas, but most of all by the authenticity of his religious ethos.
