Abstract:
In the Saint Cyril of Alexandria’s writings one can find some biblical themes used very often. These are the typologies which, in his Commentary to the Gospel of John, play an important role, because they represent key theological concepts for his Christology. In his work Saint Cyril focuses especially on the question: Who is Jesus Christ, the Person? Cyril sees the whole dynamism of the “sacred history”; he understands how the biblical narrative of the Israel becomes a history of redemption in Christ, all following „the red line” of his Christological thinking. Besides evaluating the unity between Old and New Testament, in his Commentary the context is given by ascertaining the fact that the mystery of Christ, prefigured in the OT and fulfilled in the NT, represents the foundation of our saving work. This study aims at analyzing the way in which Saint Cyril uses some biblical typologies – “types and shadows” – in order to exemplify the mystery of “Christ-The truth”.
