Abstract:
For anyone who claims having general (cultural) knowledge or has read the great works of the Romanian literature, Anton Pann also represents a landmark among these works. Today he does not “enjoy” the honour he deserves; the same can be said about Mihai Eminescu. Why? The reasons can be inferred, at least in part, from this short In Memoriam. If the literary qualities of the exact profile of the scholar Anton Pann is an open subject, the moral stake, the morals that is meant, an essential, but rather ignored subject, is the one that should remain forever in the Romanian conscience. Only few Romanian authors have managed to merge is such original manner the universal popular knowledge (printed or oral) and the folklore of that time (Greek, Turkish, Hindi etc.) with the Romanian wisdom (be it of Christian, popular or other origin).
