Abstract:
Venerated by us as Saint and condemned by others as proud, cunning, and one of the founders of the Schism of the Greeks (W. Jager), Patriarch Photius arouses the interest of scholars from different theological domains to study his works. The characteristics of the Photian personality perceived through studying the writings of the real man fit the image of the Saint which survived as a legend. It is worth noting that his work was the most prolific ambassador of his rehabilitation, so that he is now called Saint Photius the Great, the teacher, the writer, the linguist, the philosopher, the hierarch and the defender of Orthodoxy, but let us not forget that we can also call him the canonist. As a result of bibliographic research, we have found that Romanian theology does not yet have a large work from the field of Canon Law and Nomocanonic Law, the contributions of Patriarch Photius in this sector being poorly emphasized. The present article, which accompanies a recent extensive work of the author, does both a concise analysis of the photian canonical epistles, and trying also to show their relevance to Christians today and to the history of Canon Law.
